Usually when I talk about seduction, I start off by saying, “I believe I can seduce anyone. But I can tell you in reality that is far from the case (and then explain the mindset of the seductive character vs. those who are not)”.

Unfortunately, at last Sunday’s Let’s Talk About Sex: Getting Some panel discussion where we were fortunate to have Vancouver sex experts Jennifer Skrukwa of Libido Events, Dr. Pega Ren of Smart Sex Talk and Ryann Rain of Stiletto Storm (I, Ronald Lee moderated), I only able to get out the “I believe I can seduce anyone” before I was interrupted by the panelists in a move that pretty much set the tone for the entire event.

The idea for the topic came about from the observation that when sex coaches get together, it’s usually to discuss the topic of sex. Having better sex, a special new technique or toy, etc. There hasn’t been a discussion about actually how to initiate sex, the “Getting Some” and seduction part of the dating relationship that I had heard of. Thus, understanding that this is a top of mind question for many men, I threw the event together very quickly.

What surprised me was that prior to the event we had more women than men RSVP and at one point I was concerned that there might have been too many women attending. But on the on the day, the audience was comprised of 90% men, who all came keen to learn and with hungry ears.

The event started a whole 20 minutes late (note to self, and to all of you, no more late starts!) went for over an hour and a half and more than half the men stayed after the event for a discussion that proved to be as interesting and enlightening as the panel discussion itself.

In this review, I’ll share the audience feedback and follow with my own feedback.

Audience Feedback

First, let’s start with the good. I have complete respect for what the panelists do, and the men did get some good tips from them here and there.

But for the majority of the men, they felt a disconnect between them and the panelists to their (the audience’s) right. Their main complaint was the women did not understand what’s going on for a man who doesn’t know how become intimate with women.

In fact, several of the men felt the right side was “intolerant” while others didn’t feel listened to, rather it seemed like the women were pushing an agenda, lecturing about how they wanted to be treated, rather than address the topic at hand. Several others felt that the panelists were only slightly a little too feministic  for the topic and the room.

The men unanimously disapproved about how the discussion went off topic and into too much debate about the pick up artist community and it quickly became apparent to them that these women didn’t really know about the pick up artist community and had not read “The Game” (Neil Strauss, 2005).

One audience member wrote in his feedback form “didn’t like the debating of pickup community where panelists are not knowledgeable of the topic”.

Was it a case of a very polar and biased group of men? Certainly not, I’ve been in rooms where there were blatantly hurt men and women haters and these men were not those. We actively screen men like that out of our circle  (and there are groups of men like that in Vancouver, believe me) and our guys tend to be wholesome guys, genuinely together. It’s fair they would expect to come to an event and actually get what the event promised.

Overall, the men were generally displeased with the event, with a minority of men who did get something out of it.

My (Ronald’s) Feedback

As moderator of the event, I was in the precarious position of seeing the look of confusion, hope, and disappointment on the men’s faces as the questions they asked went unanswered.

I tried to setup the event by asking the panel why, despite that our sexual attitudes have changed so much over recent years and society has become freer and more relaxed about the topic, is it that North American men have so much trouble dating and initiating sex.

Before I could finish the question, one of the sex coaches started a debate about sex in media.

Alright.

Questions from the audience about what men could do better to make the right moves also went unanswered, thus I tried to participate in the panel to attempt to give the men the insight they were looking for.

“Tried” being the key word as, however, much like the opening statement at the top of this review, I was never allowed to fully form a complete thought as I was interrupted and heckled…by the panelists on the right (the lone panelist on the left did listen first to what everyone said first before contributing).

Now over the last two years I’ve put on at least 45 professional events, both through my dating companies and through the business networking group I run, with at least a third of these, panel discussions. It’s usually the case where panelists were well mannered and respectful of each other and would allow each other the time to speak even if they didn’t agree and seldom do panelists let their emotions get the better of them.

That was not the case Sunday as the panelists on the right would debate with the other panelists and the audience members. Its ironic that one of the panelists told me after the event that she thought another panelist was overbearing when the audience thought the same of her.

About halfway through the panel it also became apparent to me also that the right side of the panel had never seen, and didn’t know, about the epitome of the Art of Seduction, particularly from a male perspective. Now, let’s get one thing clear, the women on the panel never claimed to be seduction experts, they are fine sex coaches and I wholeheartedly do and will continue to send people to them for sexual technique seminars. But, much like how they treated the men’s seduction community, they were really opinionated about seduction without knowing all the points.

I suspect that their image of the male seducer is the greasy lounge lizard from 70’s and 80’s movies who hits on every women (poorly) with slick lines and manipulative moves, however I cannot confirm that. It certainly sounded like the case where they were disapproving of the very notion of a male seducer and were visualizing male stereotypes that were neither accurate nor current (I’m not saying there aren’t men like that out there, I’m saying that we are also not those and it was not what I, or anyone, save one person, in the audience was describing).

I also found it hypocritical that I was being heckled and interrupted by the most academically trained panelist when I tried to explain that there is a seduction process, a series of loose steps and events that happen during a seduction. “Come on,” she’d mutter as she shock her head disapprovingly. I find this surprising because earlier in the year she gave a presentation at the Dateology Dating and Relationship Symposium citing a scientific paper about the very same thing (up to this point, the only advice the panelists had for the men was just to be honest about what they wanted with women when negotiating to get it – something the men did not understand and wanted to hear the steps of how to do that).

By the end of the discussion, most of the audience’s general and how to questions had been blatantly ignored, although a few men were able to get some discussion going about their own individual situations.

Personally, I felt taken out of context as I wasn’t allowed to complete a thought by the panelists on the right. I find that particularly ironic as they would very likely agree with what I had to say if they bothered to listen.

My experience at the front of the room echos the experience of the men in the audience I’m sorry to say and this was by far not the best panel discussion I’ve put on. I apologize to all the men who expressed their displeasure with the event. This was the first panel discussion we’ve had that went sideways and we’ll make it up to you in the future.

I certainly would be willing to bring them back for talks again, but will be more careful about the topic next time and make sure they speak on something that is their specialty, now that I am clearer on what they know.

I wanted to fire off this email before the start of the Victoria Day long weekend (in BC) and share three news tidbits with you.

1) We’re pushing back the start date of the next The Art of Attraction 3 month coaching program. Not to the week after, but to June 12th. The reason is we’re all working on a number of big projects for you and our commitment to run the course is so great that we aren’t available at least until then.

2) The Vancouver Social Board men’s group has been relaunched. We had 11 guys come last Wednesday for the men’s group meeting and another ten who couldn’t make it because of the short notice. Twenty one guys right off the bat is outstanding.

Last week Vancouver speed dating company, Rendezvous Club (RClub for short, www.rclub.ca) held their 4th Annual 100 Dates in 100 Minutes event at Caprice Nightclub.

This is where Rendezvous Club goes all out and has 100 speed dates in one night. No simple task, I assure you. This was the third event of RClub’s that I’ve been to, the second being their previous Flirt Fest (their next one is around the corner! Want to go? Read til the bottom for details).

All in all, the event was very well organized and went smoothly, without a hitch, which explains why Rendezvous Club is Vancouver’s top speed dating company. Here’s a recap of how the night went for us.

I brought 11 guys to the event. We all met at Blenz at Granville and Nelson to hang out (see men’s group post) and socialize before the event. When we got to Caprice, the venue was already nicely setup and half the speed daters where already there.

Everyone immediately broke off and started chatting to the beautiful people there, of which there were many, and after some opening remarks from The Beat 94.5’s Holly Conway, we started.

The way the event was set up, people were put into one of three age groups (which were 18-27 years, 28-34 years, and 35-40 years old), each of which had 33 couples in them. Each “couple” was given 3 minutes to date, after which the guy would move over to the next girl and another date would begin.

There was a long break in the middle of the event and by the time the event wrapped up, it was already 11:30pm and most people booked it out of there as they had to work the next morning.

Results: What Did We Think?

Most of the guys I know who attended received between zero to 3 matches. Given how women screen men at speed dating, even getting 1 match is still very good:

If women are choosier, then what are the keys to success?

I think today, men just have to be their cool, normal, interesting selves. I did hear from Holly that there were a lot of boring guys and a few weird ones. I was amazed that some guys were still trying to uses Pick Up Artist lines/game as well that night (how many times do I have to tell you guys being a PUA doesn’t work? Future blog post for sure.).

I did ask some of the guys what they thought, and here is what one of them had to say:

In the end, how did *I* do? That’s for me to know, haa. But I will share that the only girl I remember that night was Holly (no offense to my other matches, it’s not too terribly a surprise is it?), a fellow Sagittarian who gave me her phone number at the end. We’ve already made plans for the weekend and she wants to play some game she calls ‘mount’ or something; I’m really looking forward to seeing her, I like her a lot.

All in all, bravo and good job to Chris and Rendezvous Club Vancouver Speed Dating.

Hello everyone,

As mentioned in the previous post, we are starting to soft roll out of a number of really beneficial events and activities for you, the men of Vancouver. This has been long in the works and we’re the experts when it comes to men’s issues

New Men’s Social Improvement Group Meetings Starting…now!

We’re having bi-weekly open meetings for men to come and talk about your challenges around confidence, social skills and being a man dating in Vancouver. These will be small group ‘mastermind’ style meetings where everyone gets a chance to talk about whatever is going on for you at the moment and benefit from the advice of the room.

Sometimes we’ll have special topics, sometimes it’ll be an open forum. This will definitely grow into something huge, you don’t want to miss it.

These will happen every two weeks, either on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, and for the time being, I’ll send out an email when we have these until we have enough of a list of attendees that we’ll just email that list. If you already know you want to be included in the notifications for Men’s Social Improvement Group Meetings,  let me know now.

The first one is on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 at 7pm. The topic for this one, in light that we’re having our next the Art of Attraction 3 month course is….”Everything You Wanted to Know About the Art of Attraction: CRASH COURSE”. We are going to take an hour, talk as much about the course as possible and answer all your questions about what’s in the course, in addition to hearing about what your challenges in dating are today.

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re having a great week and enjoying our fabulous weather. Not surprisingly, we, the Man Meets Woman team, are still busy working away on a number of new initiatives for you. Someone one said that when it comes to big things, estimate how long you think it’ll take to do them…and then triple that!

Well, that certainly is the case here.

I’ll try to keep this post brief, there are two things I’d like to talk about today:

1)      This next Art of Attraction course is the last one before we have to charge HST.

2)      We are starting Open Discussion Meetings every two weeks from now on for everyone.

In the meantime, if you know you want help to get your dating and relationship skills in order and you’re on the fence about taking our course to improve your life and meet women, then now is the time to do it before the Hated Sales Tax comes into play on July 1^st.

The topic will be “What Can Make Your Dating Life Better in Vancouver?” and this informal discussion will be about what’s in the Art of Attraction 3 Month Coaching Program, as well as what it’s like to meet women and date in Vancouver, and we’ll also discuss what we can do this Summer the best in your dating life so far!

Today was the first day of concept coaching and the second in-field coaching for the guys in the Secret Skills to Meeting Women weekend bootcamp with Man Meets Woman.

In this video account of a typical in-field coaching session, we had two of our clients, Jimmy and Fred, talk to some girls on the street from a cold approach (meaning they had never met the women before).

As you will see in the video, they did a really good job, the women were all smiling, laughing, having a good time. Have a look.

First, good job with the guys. I know many men who would be intimdated at the thought of approaching a group of women, and they both did it well and ‘got in’ very quickly.

With a group that size and with the amount of rapport the guys were building, their biggest mistake was that they didn’t stay with the women longer to build DEEPER rapport and connection and really get to know them (c’mon, judging from the women’s reactions, perhaps half, if not all, the women were single and here we have two good looking guys charming them).

They were definitely on their way to creating comfort, trust, and chemistry, perhaps next time the guys will know to aim for that and translate that into future dates and make them their girlfriends.

The Secret Skills to Meeting Women Weekend Bootcamp is entirely concerned with how to meet women. It’s a nerve wracking experience but once your in the groove, its fun, exciting, and empowering.

Here is another video account of the in-field portion of the Secret Skills to Meeting Women weekend bootcamp, where James and Jimmy attempt to meet two women walking on the street.

On a typical weekend night in the club district of downtown Vancouver (typically along Granville street), you’ll find a lot of people walking about, either going to restaurants and going to nightclubs.

Meeting women later in the evening on the weekend progressively becomes more challenging as the night goes on, most women are so used to being approached by guys that they don’t want to be bothered unless something really special happens (yes, no matter what women say, if Brad Pitt, for example, stepped up to them, you can bet they’d be swooning on their feet).

A big thumbs up to James for giving an “A” for effort. Let’s not pretend that this was a great example of meeting anyone, in fact it was quite poor, but remember the guys are learning and will learn the most from feedback on what they are doing wrong and can do better.

There were a number of key mistakes they made.

You see, when women are out and about and in a hurry to get somewhere, the last thing they want is to be bothered and haranged by random guys on street, so you must be on top of your game if you want to meet women in the nightclub district on a Saturday night.

James and Jimmy did have a window of opportunity, albeit it was very small (literally seconds, yes several powerful seconds) where they have the women’s ATTENTION ON THEM and they had to be different and attractive from every other guy who has ever stepped to them, and will step up to them this night.

They had to have something interesting enough to say to stop the women and start building rapport and chemistry.

The women did stop, quickly screened the guys out when they didn’t have anything to offer and gave a token boyfriend objection.

This was a good learning experience for the guys as we gave them feedback right away, and again the next day, on what they should have done. After enough experiences like these, James and Jimmy will become very good at meeting women for sure. Props to the guys for their positive attitudes, it’s what will get them far in mastering this game.
